Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do I need to pay a membership joining fee?
This ensures that our members are all people who have demonstrated a genuine commitment to a successful holiday home swap.

After I pay my membership fee, are there any further charges?
No, unless you wish to register an additional property. Your joining fee entitles you to full access to the membership database for one year - see Fees and Services.

Can I update my property details?
Yes, you can do this online at no extra cost - go to property update on the members' site.

Before joining, I'd like to know how up-to-date your holiday home swap listings are - how can I do this ?
If you select the swaps currently available link you will see pages of brief descriptions of holiday home listings. Listings are available for one year from the registration date with the most recent listings shown first. If you click on the properties short description, the registration date is available to you.

How can I find out the dates when my fellow members want to swap their holiday home?
In both the brief and full descriptive listings are the dates that members want to swap their holiday homes: sometimes this will indicate that they are 'open to offers', sometimes it will be quite explicit.

I have particular needs in that I want to swap to a non-smokers holiday home, with disabled access. How do I find suitable properties?
Well, you'll be able to explain your needs to any prospective swap partners of course but also our search function allows you to restrict the nature of your initial search.

How do I arrange a holiday home swap?
Go to search for a swap for our easy step-by-step search process. Look for listings in the areas you have selected as a desired destination and then consider those members' preferred destinations and dates - we would advise against immediately ruling out members who haven't listed your location in their preferences as an approach might prompt them to consider an exchange with you. You should also of course start to get enquiries about your listing, offering you more possibilities. You can consider each of these against your personal preferences but please do let your fellow member's know if you are not able to progress a swap with them, so that they can rule you out and investigate other options.

Will I have any help in arranging my holiday home swap?
Holidayhomeswap.com is entirely self-service in that you will need to establish contact yourself with other members who are prospective swap partners.

Am I limited to one swap during my membership period?
No, you can arrange as many as you like.

Does holidayhomeswap.com have a secure site for credit and debit payments?
Yes, we do. Payments are made PayPal which uses SSL technology to encrypt debit and credit card details.

Will my payment be deducted from my debit/credit card in my own currency?
Yes, but please remember that exchange rates fluctuate daily.

I would prefer not to pay over the Internet - is there another way to pay?
Yes. UK customers can pay by personal cheque although we would prefer to receive payments over the internet. Please contact us if you want to discuss this further.

What do I do if I've forgotten my password?
You will need to send us an email from your registered email address, quoting your membership number and notifying us that you have forgotten your password. We will send this back to you by return email.

How can I be sure of having a successful holiday home swap?
There are no guarantees of course but, as you discuss and prepare the swap arrangements with your membership partner, a degree of trust will build up. You may also find it helpful to confirm the arrangements in writing before the holiday begins.

Is it safe to leave my holiday home with people that I do not know?
Well, if you rent your holiday home already then of course this is something that you have already considered and come to terms with. Again, there can be no guarantees but having somebody in your holiday home at the same time as you are in theirs gives each of you a greater incentive to treat the other's holiday home with respect.

What type of holiday homes are available for swap?
We have all sorts of holiday homes on our database, from mobile homes to large detached villas and everything in between. Different people look for different things - the most important thing is that you are honest and realistic in your description of your holiday home.

Who pays the bills?
Members must agree in advance who will be responsible for which bills, particularly any optional extras that might be available (e.g. a phone). In many cases, home owners continue to pay their own household bills during the exchange.

What if my holiday home exchange partner cancels at the last minute?
You can reduce the risk of this happening by keeping each other informed of your arrangements and even by confirming specific things at the same time (e.g. book airline tickets on the same day). You may also like to consider Trip Cancellation Insurance. Any member of holidayhomeswap.com who is known to have broken a firm exchange arrangement without a valid reason will be refused future membership.
